Case Studies.

Cartington Castle.

Cartington Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It is a 14th Century medieval English Castle North West of Rothbury in Northumberland.

Over 2 years we have consolidated this beautiful ruin so it remains an important landmark in our history.

Blenkinsopp Castle.

Blenkinsopp Castle dates back to the 14th Century. Heritage Consolidation started work on the restoration of the ruins to safeguard this area’s historic landmark. As you would expect from a 2 year project the repairs were extensive and varied from lime work repairs and re pointing to the use of more modern materials such as resins and stainless steel. We were allocated 3 years to complete the project but completed in 18 months and the building has now been secured for the foreseeable future.

Working along side Historic England, the Castle was completed. Blenkinsopp Castle has now been removed from the 'at risk' register.

Berwick Bridge.

Berwick Bridge is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

As with all of our work, we take photographs during all phases of the project in order to create an exact match to the original building.

Rowan Tree Stobb

This bastle is high up in the hills of the East Allen Valley near Allendale. It is a rare example of our local history and is believed to date back to the 16th century. Natural England appointed Heritage Consolidation to halt the decay of this very important building. With sensitive restoration we removed all vegetation, and debris.

We removed the 17th century chimney stack stone by stone and rebuilt it to retain its distinctive lean which adds to its character. With conservation in mind we also incorporated bat ledges hoping that it will be a safe haven for local wildlife to roost and hibernate. Whilst restoring this bastle we discovered an 18th century brick oven which we restored and is now an interesting feature.

Whilst working with Natural England on this project we removed timbers in the building which are being dated to confirm the buildings age. We worked along side the Archaeologists who were delighted to record and inspect the internal areas which had been inaccessible for years.

Rowan Tree Stobb is now a piece of history that can now be accessed and enjoyed by all.

Barney Craig Mineshop.

Barney Craig mine shop is located on the site of the former Carrshield Mine in the West Allen Valley.  It used to be the largest mine shop in the region.

There are the remains of over three centuries of mining at the site. The earliest known mining activity at the site was a level opened in 1760s and the mine continued to be in use throughout the 19th century.

The old mine shop is an important feature of the area's industrial heritage and has therefore been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

At imminent risk of collapsing beyond repair, the building was gifted by Allendale Estate to Allen Valleys Enterprise in a critical condition. The building was renovated by Heritage Consolidation using traditional methods and existing materials to be preserved and to serve as an asset for the local community.
